Happy Holidays!

Hopefully, everyone had a very Merry Christmas! I did, even though it was a little hectic. Jim had to work on Christmas Eve morning and I had to finish my Christmas shopping (every year I wait until the last minute!). Then, we made all the dishes to pass for Christmas - Sausage Breakfast Casserole, Banana Bread, Broccoli Rice Casserole, and Chocolate Cherry Trifle (this turned out really well - you can find the recipe here). Both Jim's and my families celebrate on Christmas Day, so we fit both in. Christmas morning is spent with my family at my sister and brother-in-law's house. Afterwards, we pick up Jim's sons and head to his parents' house to celebrate with his family. Then, it's back to our house so Jim, the boys, and I can open our gifts to each other. It does make for a long day, but I guess it beats having everyone over at our house. As usual, Jim spoiled me and bought me a necklace I had noticed but I'm not sure I ever even mentioned it to him. I love it!

Invites Have Been Mailed!

The invites were mailed today and I'm so glad to have that completed! Unfortunately, they wouldn't hand cancel them. I took them to my hometown's post office because they hand canceled my save the dates. But, with it being Christmas, they were unable to do so for my invites. I hope they arrive to the guests in good condition because I love how they turned out. A recently married knottie local to me has started an invitation business (So In Love Invitations) and I think she did a great job.

Supporting Domestic Auto Companies

I realize I am extremely biased on this topic, as I work for one of the domestic automakers. But, knowing how much the demise of all or even one of the companies would affect me, my family, and friends, I thought I'd pass along the following web site:

100 Days!

I cannot believe that in 100 days, I will be in the Dominican marrying my best friend! It's been over a year of planning this way-off-in-the-future event, and it seems to be coming quicker now. :) Luckily, my wedding nightmares haven't been as nightmarish lately. In them, it's always the day before or the day of the wedding but all that's been planned and is ready is what I currently (at the time of the dream) have completed. So, as I'm getting checks done for the wedding, the nightmares don't seem as bad. My next big to-do is to get the invites out, hopefully in the next week or two. I have the envelopes and am taking a calligraphy class this Friday (nothing like waiting until the last minute!). The actual invites are going through final proofs now and I can't wait to see them when they are completed!

Snow Already!

This past weekend, Jim and I went up north and we had our first snowfall. And it was quite cold! We went up so that Jim could go bow hunting one last time before rifle season starts next weekend. And he did get his first deer with his bow! So our low supply of venison is soon to be replenished. While he hunted though, I spent my time staying warm inside, napping and reading. Just the kind of weekend I enjoy up north. ;)

Bought The Wedding Bands

This check makes the wedding seem very real and really close! :D We went to the jewelers that Jim had my engagement ring made (ACE Jewelers) and picked out our wedding bands. Mine is an eternity band that looks just like the band on my e-ring, but is much slimmer. Jim's is a tungsten carbide ring that is mostly brushed, but has some polished details on it. We were able to take mine with us as it's a little large, but lines up perfectly with my engagement ring, so I can get them soldered together after the wedding. Jim's had to be ordered, but should be in a couple weeks from now.

More Weddings On The Horizon

It sounds like the wedding planning in the family won't end with mine. Two weeks ago, my mom's boyfriend asked for my sister's and my blessing to marry my mom. :) She's also asked me to be her maid of honor. But, the planning for hers will pretty much be simultaneous with mine since it's three weeks after Jim's and mine. That will be a little crazy! Although, it will be a real small ceremony. Then, this past weekend, my sister's boyfriend proposed to her. :) When she told me, they were going to joke and say theirs will be the month after my mom's, and since my sisters and I decided when we were young that we would be each others maid of honor, I will be hers as well. Luckily, they decided not to get me all worked up and worried. But, their wedding will be sometime in 2010. I'm so happy for all of them!

Pumpkin Patches and Cider Mills

I'm definitely looking forward to this weekend, although it sounds like it isn't going to be the greatest weather-wise. Tomorrow, we will be taking Nathan and Ryan to pick out pumpkins at the pumpkin patch and carve them tomorrow night. Then, one of my best friends is in town from Chicago and we're heading to the cider mill Sunday afternoon for some cider and doughnuts. :) Yummy!

New Toy

Last night, Jim gave me my birthday gift and I'm so excited about it. :) I've wanted a digital SLR for some time and now I have one! Originally, I had wanted the new starter Canon xSi, but after reading some reviews, I also really liked the Canon 40D. And with the release of the 50D, the price of the 40D came down some and this is what Jim got me. I'm so excited about it. :D I really have no knowledge of photography but am looking forward to playing with the camera and maybe taking a class or two. I took some pictures of my engagement ring last night and can't believe the quality and ease of focusing. I'm looking forward to taking it up north this weekend and being able to take pictures of the color change.

No Longer A Twenty-Something

Well, I've finally reached the big 3-0! I woke up this morning to my husband-to-be wishing me a happy birthday and calling me an old lady. ;) Luckily, with him being several years older than me, that goes both ways! Nothing crazy planned for my birthday though, especially with my family already throwing me a surprise party. Tonight, Jim and I will be going out to dinner and this weekend, we're heading up north along with Nathan and Ryan to celebrate. I'm looking forward to another relaxing weekend, especially with the color change being really close to peak.

Four Years Ago Tonight

Jim and I went on our first date. :D I can't believe it's been four years already! Time flies by when you're having fun. We had so much fun that night too. It was after work and we met near my condo at a billiards bar. It was around dinner time when we got there and our first date was nearly seven hours long. I don't think either of us realized how quickly the time went by, but before we knew it, it was well after midnight, both of us had to work the next day and Jim still had almost an hour drive home. And here we are four years later, less than five months from our wedding. :)

First Day of Fall

Fall is here! I'm glad because it's my favorite season. :) Although, since meeting Jim, I have become sad when summer ends as it means no more days out on the boat. But, with that also comes weekends up north, the leaves changing color, cooler weather, and that the holidays are just around the corner. In fact, we'll be heading up north this weekend for a much-needed relaxing weekend where I read a lot and take quite a few naps while Jim gets a lot of work done. ;)

Surprise!

Well, my family and Jim got me! This past weekend, they held a surprise 30th birthday party and I had no idea, especially since my birthday isn't for another three weeks. We were supposed to be going out to dinner for my dad's birthday since his birthday was the week before and he was in Alaska for it. The plan was to meet at the restaurant where my mom is a manager, and then head out to dinner. Well, they obviously had other plans. When we got there, I walked into a room with everyone yelling 'Surprise!'. It was a lot of fun - my family, future in-laws, and friends were there as well.

One Year Ago...

Jim proposed to me! :D I can't believe a year has past already! It really has flown by. Even scarier, our wedding will be here in half that time. We've gotten a lot of the details figured out and even though we're having a destination wedding, there's still a lot of things to do! Although, I have my checklist in place and will be checking my way through it in the coming months. I am so looking forward to our wedding and know it will be here before long!

Airfare Purchased

Last night, we purchased the airfare for the wedding and I'm so glad to have this done, especially with the way airfare seems to be fluctuating. We'll be traveling with my immediate family and my mom booked almost everyone else in our group yesterday as well. Plus, Jim's sister booked their trip last week. I'm getting so excited about the wedding! :D Now, if American Airlines can just please keep their current luggage policy for international travel in effect through our wedding, I would much appreciate it!

Vacation's Almost Over

Well, I've had the past two weeks off because of shutdown and as vacations usually go, the time seemed to fly by! Overall, it was really relaxing and I was able to get some wedding-related things done as well. Most importantly, everything is squared away with our group airfare to Punta Cana for the wedding. My immediate family will be traveling with us, so we have have a group of 12 going together. We also had Jim's two sons stay with us this past week and it's been a lot of fun having them here. We went to the Detroit Zoo one day and have been on the boat a couple of times. Speaking of which, we're heading out to go tubing one more time this afternoon. :)

Connecticut and NYC

Last weekend, Jim and I, along with a bunch of family members went to Connecticut to celebrate my Great Uncle Jerry's 90th birthday. We flew into LaGuardia Saturday morning and drove to Southbury for the dinner Saturday evening. All together, there were 24 of us that were there to celebrate. :) It was great seeing everyone, especially Uncle Jerry, and we had a really good time. Then, on Sunday, we drove back to New York City to go sightseeing. Neither Jim or I had been to NYC, so after checking into our hotel, we went and saw a few sights - Times Square, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, World Trade Center site, and the Hudson River. Sunday night, we found a nice restaurant (with really good pasta!) and then went to a few bars. We did a little bit of sightseeing Monday, but had to head to the airport for our flight home. Overall, we had a fantastic weekend and would like to go back.

Save the Dates Are In The Mail!

Well, I finally (note the finally!) got the save the dates for the wedding in the mail and am so glad to have this completed. I decided to go with the boarding pass save the dates quite some time ago and have had them designed for a while as well. But some details had to be finalized, such as reserving the resort for our wedding date. :) Once this was done and I finished the design, I had them printed and began the cutting and assembly process. It was a little more time-consuming than I had planned, but I am very pleased with how they turned out. Because of all of the info needed for booking the trip, we also included a magnet and brochure.

We Finally Have A Wedding Date!

Well, after waiting months until the beginning of this year for airfare to be available for our preferred wedding date, we've finally reserved the resort for our wedding date of February 27, 2009! Yay, I'm so excited and relieved! We've decided to go with the Melia Caribe Tropical for our resort and after reading some posts from brides that have recently been married there, I'm so excited about this too! The pricing as of right now is just a little more than we were hoping guests would have to pay, but we have our fingers crossed that since the airfare just became available, it will be a little lower in the next couple months when guests would be making their reservations. Now, I just have to finish my boarding pass save the dates, so they can be sent out!

Back From Vacation

Well, we're back from our vacation to Florida. We took Jim's two boys, Nathan and Ryan, to Orlando for a six-day trip and had a really good time. The boys had never been to Florida and we let them pick out the theme parks. They were not interested in the Disney parks, so we bought passes to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. While it was different going with children (didn't make it to any of the roller coasters), we all had a good time. And we did get one day at the beach. On Saturday (the warmest day we were there - mid 80s), we drove over to Cocoa Beach and spent the day there. So, until the next vacation... (which quite possibly is the wedding!)

Found the Dress!

I am so excited - I found my wedding dress! This past Saturday, I tried on another slew of wedding dresses. I thought one of the first ones could have been it, but the absolute last dress I tried on was THE one! I am quite an indecisive person, so we didn't purchase it then. Plus, I wanted my mom and sisters to try on MOB and bridesmaid dresses. (My mom did end up buying her dress AND getting a great deal on it.) So, we made another appointment for yesterday. The only downside was that Saturday night (after a few glasses of wine), I looked back through the pictures and started second-guessing myself. But, yesterday, we went back and I tried them both on again. I put my dress on second and knew that was it. Even other people said so. Although, in my opinion, why do people do that? Did I look so bad in the last dress, that's why they're saying it? I guess that's the pessimistic side of me! :) Regardless, I found my dress and am so glad. Now - to the hard parts: keeping it a secret from Jim and finding a resort for the wedding!

No Wedding Dress Yet :(

Well, my wedding dress shopping excursion this past Saturday did not conclude in a purchase. :( However, I was able to get a better idea of the type of dress I'm looking for. The first dresses I tried on were the traditional A-line skirts. I like a few of them, but they really don't seem conducive to a beach wedding. Then, I started trying on the dresses with slimmer skirts. These seem to be hit or miss on me. Some seem to make my hips look huge, but there was one, that I really did like. There are a few more dresses that I want to try on at David's Bridal, so I have made another appointment for this Saturday...

Wedding Dress Shopping Today!

Today, I'll be meeting my mom, two sisters, and niece for lunch, and then we will be heading to David's Bridal to go dress shopping! I'm a little surprised I'm looking forward to it so much, which is weird in itself. (Don't all brides get super excited about going dress shopping?) For the past couple of months, my sisters kept asking when are we going dress shopping, when are we going? I guess it seemed like the wedding was too far out to be thinking about finding a dress already. Plus, we still haven't picked out a resort yet because we're waiting for airfare prices, which will be available in April. But, we hit the one-year away mark this past Wednesday, so the date is definitely getting closer. I also will be giving my sisters and niece their Will You Be My Bridesmaid/Flower Girl cards at lunch. I finished them up last weekend and I think they turned out pretty cute - I hope they like them!

Going to the Boat Show Today

Jim and I are heading to the Boat Show this afternoon, which I'm looking forward to. We went two years ago, and at the time, were looking for a boat to purchase. So, we were mainly looking at boats within our price range, and only went on a couple of the large yachts. So, with no plans to upgrade our boat anytime soon, I plan on spending the afternoon dreaming about owning one of those yachts and picking out my favorite, you know, just in case we win the lottery one day! ;)

All Moved In

This week, we were able to get everything moved from the condo into our house. I'm still getting used to the 'our' part. ;) The condo is empty and the keys have been turned over to the family renting it. Unfortunately, since we had to move everything so quickly, the house is an absolute mess; boxes, bags, and stuff everywhere. We have made quite a bit of progress over the weekend getting it put away, but there still is a lot of work left. I'll be glad when it's all organized though!

Moving In Together

Well, after almost two years of 'living together' in two homes, Jim and I are finally moving in together into his house, soon to be our house. We have been trying to sell my condo for over a year, and with the market getting worse and worse, we decided last fall to try and rent it out. We've had a few people interested, but they wanted to pay much less rent than we were willing to accept. Well, just after the New Year, I found a posting for a family looking for a condo in the area of mine. Well, it's almost two weeks later and the paperwork will be signed this afternoon! I'm so excited (and relieved). We spend so much money for one household to always be empty, and with the wedding coming up in a year, we'll be able to save much more. However, the actual packing and moving, I'm not looking forward to though...

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

Well, my trip in Langenthal is coming near a close, my flight back home is this Friday. I've had a good time, well, I guess as much as you can on a two-week business trip. ;) The hotel I'm staying at is the Hotel Baeren, which is really nice. Here is a picture of the hotel as well as two pictures from my window:

The highlight of the trip definitely has been visiting my uncle, aunt, and two cousins this past weekend. My uncle picked me up on Friday evening, and we drove the hour and a half to their home in Ermatingen. Saturday, we did some souvenir shopping and my cousin had a hockey game. Saturday night, we had a traditional Swiss dish - Raclette. Cheese is melted in a raclette burner by each person, seasonings are added, and then it's poured over potatoes. On the top of the raclette burner, meat and other vegetables are cooked. It was very good - I looked online and found that Williams-Sonoma has a Raclette Maker and if I can find the ingredients at home, I'd really like to buy it. Dinner also including some merlot tasting, which was really good. Sunday, we didn't do too much, and then I took the train back to Langenthal late Sunday afternoon. Here are a few pictures from the weekend:

While it has been a fun visit, I'm definitely looking forward to going home this weekend!

Off To Langenthal, Switzerland

Well, in several hours, I'll be on a plane, heading to Langenthal, Switzerland for work. Langenthal is about an hour outside of Zurich, which is where I'll be flying into. I've been traveling quite a bit for work the past few months, and am not totally thrilled about traveling again so soon. Mainly because my trip is scheduled for two weeks, and has a possibility of getting extended. However, I am looking forward to visiting Switzerland, and hopefully getting a chance to do some sightseeing. In addition, I have family - uncle, aunt, and two cousins - about two or three hours away that I'll get to visit. On the plus side if my trip does get extended, I was able to find flights for under $500 for Jim to come and visit me, so if that happens, I'll definitely be looking forward to that!
